My first book, Japan, Alcoholism, and Masculinity: Suffering Sobriety in Tokyo, was published in 2015 with Lexington Books. The book highlights the struggles and difficulties Japanese men negotiate as they try to stay sober and “work the program” in either Alcoholics Anonymous or Danshukai, Japan’s two major sobriety support groups. The men are constantly negotiating a tension between wanting to live sober as the program commands and their encounters with a Japanese public frequently unsympathetic to their struggles and interpretation of alcoholism and addiction.
