The foundation of my research interests coalesce around contemporary Japan, psychoactive substance use, declarations of addiction, expectations of recovery, and gender – particularly masculinity. My first book, Japan, Alcoholism, and Recovery: Suffering Sobriety in Tokyo<\/em> (2015), highlights the difficulties experienced by Japanese men trying to live sober and work programs largely reliant on recovery and transformative protocols or paradigms they struggled to accept and incorporate into daily life.<\/p>\n

During the spring of 2022 I was a Fulbright Scholar in Tokyo working on a new project with groups providing support and\"\" care for the city’s unhoused. I situated this outreach work against broad declarations on the direction of Japan’s future, typically emanating from center of power, to argue for the need to meaningfully consideration alternative forms of societal organization and a shift in the categories emphasized to index a purposeful existence and optimism for the future. My second book, Fraught Futures: Hope, Connection, and the Unhoused across Tokyo<\/em> (Cornell University Press – early 2027), examines these contestation structuring renderings of Japan’s future and it’s impact on marginalized communities.<\/p>\n

In October 2024 I participated in the\u00a0Imagined Futures\u00a0<\/em>workshop at Tokyo’s German Institute of Japanese Studies (DIJ) and presented on this new project for the first time. A recording of my presentation can be viewed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
