Eric spent March, 1998 at the Red’s minor league camp in Sarasota. He was released March 21 because “they didn’t have room to keep him”. After a tryout with the Braves on March 28, Eric signed with them on April 3 and reported to their camp at Orlando. He joined the Braves Carolina League team, The Danville 97s, and will be pitching in middle relief to complement their five right-handed starters. Eric is wearing number 9 with the 97s. \nEric entered the April 12 game against the Prince William Cannons<\/span><\/u><\/a> with a 4-2 lead, pitching in relief of starter Jason Marquis who gave up seven hits and two runs in three innings. In the fifth he allowed a hit and a walk before giving way to Jason Flach. Bryan Britt singled of Flach to score Adam Kenndy and then loaded the bases. A line drive double play (3b, 3b to 2b) and a ground out ended the inning. The 97s lost 7-6 before 847 fans on a three run homer in Prince William’s 4 run ninth inning as their record dropped to 1-2. Despite the run allowed, the NAPBL player search<\/span><\/u><\/a> database says that Eric’s ERA is 0.00. The official statistics also list Eric with 0 IP in the game, so it’s possible that someone else pitched in the fourth inng, but the game story did not mention it.
\nOn April 16, Eric pitched 2 innings in the 97s 8-0, one-hit loss to the Kinston Indians<\/span><\/u><\/a> in Kinston. Eric entered the game in the sixth inning with the 97s trailing 6-0 after a 5 run Kinston 5th of starter Robbie Bell and Adam Milburn.
\nOn April 19, Eric pitched a hitless ninth inning in the 97s 12-4 victory over the Prince William Cannons as Danville’s record rose to 4-5. Shawn Onley, in relief of starter Dwayne Jacobs picked up the win as the 97s scored 4 tuns in the 5th and 6 runs in the 6th. Adam Milburn and Ray Beasely also pitched for the 97s.
\nOn April 24, Eric started the 9th inning of the 97s 3-1 loss to the division leading Winston-Salem Warthogs<\/span><\/u><\/a>. Eric recorded his first strikeout of 1998 as the 97s were held to 3 hits, ending their 6 game winning streak and dropping their record to 8-6. Derek Jacobs started for the 97s and waas relieved by Wes Culp. Shawn Onley finished the 9th for Eric.
\nOn May 3, Eric pitched the 9th inning of the 97s 11-7 loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats<\/span><\/u><\/a> Eric entered the game down 8-3 and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk. Starter Jason Marquis (5.2 IP, 5R) and relievers Mike Porzio and Adam Milburn were also hit hard.
\nOn May 4, Eric was released by the 97s.

The Bees starts<\/span><\/h3>\n

Eric’s seventh start took place August 29 against the Quad City River Bandits. Eric gave up 3 earned runs in 6 innings and did not receive a decision in the Reds’ 5-4 loss. The Reds will be playing the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs.
\nCedar Rapids defeated Burlington 14-12 and 8-1 to end the Reds’ season. Eric did not pitch in either game.<\/p>\n

Eric’s sixth start was on August 24 against the Quad City River Bandits. Burlington staked Eric a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Eric allowed one hit in one third of an inning before giving way to S. Wright, who earned the win in Burlington’s 6-1 victory.<\/p>\n

Eric’s fifth start was delayed by an August 17th rainout. He pitched against the Cedar Rapids Kernels<\/span><\/u><\/a> on August 19. Eric pitched 6 innings, struck out and walked 3 and allowed 2 runs to score in the Bees 3-2 victory.<\/p>\n

Eric’s fourth start, on August 12th against the Quad City River Bandits<\/span><\/u><\/a>, saw him struggle to another no decision. The Bees gave Eric scored two in the top of the second which Quad Cities recovered in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 2-2. After Eric allowed 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Bees answered with 3 in the top of the fifth leaving the decision in the hands of Eric’s relief. J. Riedling held the River Bandits in check in the fifth, but J. Phillips allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring in the 7 inning second game of the doubleheader. Eric allowed 10 hits and 5 runs in 3 2\/3 innings in the Bees 6-5 loss to the River Bandits.<\/p>\n

Eric’s third start saw him hurl 5-1\/3 innings allowing only a single unearned run. He walked and struck out 5 batters. The game probably took place August 7 and was a 10-3 win against the Clinton Lumber Kings<\/span><\/u><\/a>. (guesses are based on the NAPBL search page<\/span><\/u><\/a> and the Bees schedule)<\/p>\n

Eric made his second start August 1st against the Lansing Lugnuts<\/span><\/u><\/a>. He pitched 6 innings and left with a 6-2 lead. His bullpen could not hold the lead and Burlington lost 12-8.<\/p>\n

Eric was sent to the Reds’ Burlington farm club and won his first start, pitching 8 1\/3 innings against the Peoria Chiefs<\/span><\/u><\/a> and allowing only 1 run while striking out 5 in Burlington’s 2-1 win at Peoria July 27. From the Sept 1-14,1997 issue of <\/span>Baseball America<\/span><\/u><\/a>, p19:<\/span><\/tt> Eric Tryon…pitched 8 1\/3 innings of no-hit ball at Peoria despite a heat index of 115 degrees.<\/p>\n

The Lookouts<\/span><\/u><\/a> starts<\/span><\/h3>\n

Eric’s second start against Huntsville, July 21, saw him allowing another homerun to Mike Neill. This time in the first inning. After a scoreless second, the Stars touched Eric for 5 runs in the second. Eric left in the fourth inning having thrown four wild pitches. The 8-4 deficit that Eric left turned into a 13-6 rout as Eric’s relief was also hit hard. box score<\/span><\/u><\/a>
\nEric struggled early in his fifth start, July 13 at Mobile<\/span><\/u><\/a>, allowing Dustin Allen’s thirteenth home run of the year in the first. After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Lookouts rallied and tied the score at 4 in the fourth. Eric allowed another run in the fifth to fall behind 5-4. His relief, Todd Etler and Domingo Jean, allowed 13 runs over the next two innings as the Lookouts fell to the BayBears<\/span><\/u><\/a> 18-5, dropping Eric to 0-3 on the year. \nEric started well in his fourth start July 3 against the Huntsville<\/span><\/u><\/a> Stars<\/span><\/u><\/a> starting with four shutout innings. He entered the fifth with a 5-0 lead but was unable to retire a batter in the fifth. After a leadoff walk followed by a single, Eric allowed back-to-back home runs to Mike Neill and Miguel Tejada. \nEric was hit hard in his third start, lasting only 2 2-3 innings against the Orlando Cubs<\/span><\/u><\/a> on June 28 in the Lookouts 11-6 loss. Ricky Freeman’s fourth homerun of the year in the first put Eric in the hole early and he never recovered. The Lookouts trailed 6-0 after three innings. \nEric pitched well in his second start June 23 against the Jacksonville Suns, pitching 5 shutout innings until allowing Juan Encarnacion’s 16th homerun of the year. He left after 6 innings with the score tied 1-1. \nEric made his debut June 17 for the Chattanooga Lookouts<\/span><\/u><\/a> against the Memphis Chicks<\/span><\/u><\/a>. He pitched 5 innings, gave up 4 hits and three earned runs and left trailing 3-2, taking the loss. The final score was 4-3. He threw 75 pitches, 43 for strikes. \nTryon<\/b> made a dent in the NCAA III career record books as his stellar collegiate career came to a close in 1997. Tryon<\/b> finishes his career ranked second in NCAA III history in complete games (30) and fifth in strikeouts (331). He was only two shutouts away from tying the NCAA III record of 11. Tryon<\/b> holds school records in all of those pitching categories, and also in wins (29) and earned run average (2.44). His eight triples as a batter ties the school’s career record for triples.<\/p>\n

\nJunior Eric Tryon was “Mr. Everything” in the ICAC, leading the league in pitching (6-0, 0.80 ERA) and batting (.458 batting average) during league games. He was named the league’s MVP and was also a first-team all-region and Academic All-District selection. Tryon broke the school record for victories (11) and strikeouts in a season (103), ending the year with an 11-1 record and a 2.10 ERA. He also set conference records for wins (6) and strikeouts (55) in league games.<\/p>\n
