One of the issues raised was how Rizzuto <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/rickert\/comparisons-of-some-long-time-shortstops-to-average-shortstops\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\"> compared to the &#8220;average&#8221; shortstop<\/span><\/u><\/a>. One way to look at this is to take the average totals of the regular shortstops for each team in the league and then total these over a player&#8217;s career.<\/p>\n<p>I went the &#8220;Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball&#8221;(by Neft and Cohen) and totalled the numbers for the teams&#8217; regular shortstops, making a few changes in some recent seasons. (In 1992, Ozzie Guillen was not the White Sox regular shortstop playing in only 12 games) I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.totalbaseball.com\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\">Total Baseball<\/span><\/u><\/a> and the Bill James Electronic Baseball Encyclopedia from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rose-hulman.edu\/~rickert\/BB\/%3Ca%20href=\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\">Miller Associates<\/span><\/u><\/a> to get fielding statistics. Marshall Wright&#8217;s <i>Nineteenth Century Baseball<\/i> (MacFarland Press) and David Nemec&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ISBN%3D1556115008\/hickokssportshisA\/6372-4448553-343143\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\">The Great Encyclopedia of 19th-Century Baseball<\/span><\/u><\/a> were used to determine the 19th century regulars and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\">The Sporting News<\/span><\/u><\/a> Guide and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stats.com\/\"><u><span style=\"color: #000080\">STATS, Inc.<\/span><\/u><\/a> Handbooks for recent seasons.
