For example:<br \/>\n<tt><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"> 2 + 2; <\/span><\/tt><br \/>\nWhen you see the command <span style=\"color: #0000aa;font-family: Courier New\"><tt>Warning, premature end of input<\/tt><\/span>, it usually means that a semi-colon is missing.<\/p>\n<p>To get a floating point evaluation of a number, use the command <tt><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\">evalf<\/span><\/tt>:<br \/>\n<tt><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"> evalf(sqrt(2));<br \/>\nevalf(Pi,100);<br \/>\n<\/span><\/tt><br \/>\nTo substitute for an expression, use the <tt><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\">subs<\/span><\/tt> command:<br \/>\n<tt><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"> subs( x=7, x^2);<br \/>\n<\/span><tt><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"> To solve a system of equations such as <i>x<\/i> + <i>y<\/i> = 10, 2<i>x<\/i> - <i>y<\/i> = 3, use <i>Maple<\/i>'s <tt>solve<\/tt> command:<br \/>\n<tt>solve( {x+y=10, 2*x-y=3},{x,y}); <\/tt><\/span><\/tt><\/tt><\/p>\n<p>To plot a function, use <i>Maple<\/i>&#8216;s <tt>plot<\/tt> command:<br \/>\n<tt> plot( x^2, x=-3..3); <\/tt><\/p>\n<p>If an equation does not have a nice algebraic solution, the <tt>fsolve<\/tt> command can be used to get an approximate solution. If possible, it&#8217;s helpful to plot the function and get an estimate of the solution:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"><tt> plot( x-cos(x), x=-Pi..Pi);<br \/>\nfsolve( x=cos(x), x=.8);<br \/>\n<\/tt><br \/>\nTo differentiate a function, use the <tt>diff<\/tt> command:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Courier New\"><tt> diff( sin(x), x);<br \/>\ndiff( exp(3*x),x);<br \/>\n<\/tt><br \/>\nTo implicitly differentiate using the <tt>diff<\/tt> command, you must write the dependent variable explicitly as a function of the independent variable.
