uses a variety of activities to help build crucial skills for the participating elementary students. \u00a0Students learn about basic science concepts related to plants, such as photosynthesis and how to water and grow plants. \u00a0And best of all, the kids have a great time with these activities! \u00a0As second-grader Jackson Schommer exclaimed, \u201cI like learning how to grow plants. \u00a0We get to water them and take some home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-259 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-1-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Experiments are also run to reinforce concepts that they learn. \u00a0Kids partake in activities such as predicting if celery or a white radish will absorb more water, or writing down in journals what they think will happen to several seedlings that are grown either in the light or in the dark. \u00a0These experiments make the students think about what they have learned and apply concepts to real life applications. \u00a0This increases critical thinking and hypothesis forming skills of the students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-271 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-3-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-3-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-3-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-3-700x465.jpg 700w, https:\/\/wordpress.rose-hulman.edu\/ryvesup\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/234\/2017\/11\/Ryves-Up-3.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An article from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hanen.org\/Helpful-Info\/Early-Literacy-Corner\/Critical-Thinking.aspx\">The Hanen Centre<\/a> discusses why critical thinking is so important. \u00a0Critical thinking and language influence each other as children learn. \u00a0Critical thinking makes kids use words such as because, if, then, and different verb tenses to expand their language. \u00a0This expanded language also improves the ability to critically think and form well-structured statements. \u00a0Increased critical thinking abilities also helps improve literacy by allowing kids to problem solve, read between the lines, and connect multiple concepts and ideas. \u00a0The kids even bring seedlings back home to grow to continue their learning outside of school and the Ryves Up!
