Ecuador Project Updates! 1/14/26

Our Implementation Trip has officially been pushed back to late August, the week before the 2026-27 school year begins. We will use this extra time to refine our pre-implementation trip report and ensure plenty of time for construction to begin before we visit the site! With this change, plans are in progress for members of our team to attend the Engineers Without Borders USA 2026 Conference during late February. (Below is an image from the 2025 EWB conference - please don't mind the poor image quality) Superstructure design is complete and ready for review. Our next step in design is to finish reviewing the current structure's existing foundation to determine its suitability.

Updates on Ecuador Project- 3/20/2024 Meeting

The design and calculations for the retaining wall are finally complete! The next step towards the start of the physical build is preparing documentation to present to companies to get contracting for construction. Another major focus is the multitudes of structural issues of the current school structure. Assessments on the structure are taking place to work out solutions.

Welcome Dr. Thomas Frankie

It is with great excitement that we are pleased to share that Thomas Frankie, PhD, PE, SE has agreed to join our mentor team as a technical mentor.  Dr. Frankie is a Senior Associate at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He specializes in reinforced concrete structures and has extensive experience in failure investigation, nondestructive evaluation, structural analysis, development of repair plans and specifications, and construction period services. He will be assisting us in regards to analyzing the existing structure on our El Sembrador School project.  He is very knowledgeable in various different types of non-destructive testing that will be applicable to our project.  Welcome aboard Dr. Frankie!

Highway Cleanup

This past Sunday morning, EWB-RHIT had the opportunity to get back out on the stretch of of US-40 the the club adopted back in 2016 and do another highway cleanup.  It was a great bonding experience for some of our members while also giving them the opportunity to give back to the local community and keep the environment clean.

Welcoming Jacquelyn Miller to the Mentor Team

It is with great pleasure that we are announcing that Jacquelyn Miller has agreed to join our mentor team as a technical mentor.  Jacquelyn is a 2020 graduate of Rose-Hulman with a bachelors in civil engineering.  During her time at Rose, she was very involved with EWB, serving as both Engineering Team Manager and President.  She played a major role in our latrine project in Gomoa Gyaman, Ghana, and our water distribution project in Chaguarloma, Ecuador.  She currently works as an design engineer at Schaefer a structural engineering firm. She willingly agreed to come on board to fill in a gap we had needing someone else who focuses on structures as we get our new structural project underway.  We are super excited to have her on board and look forward…

New Project – El Sembrador School

Unfortunately this summer brought our water distribution project, in Ecuador, to an end.  At the end of the day there were land ownership issues associated with the spring that the club was planning to use as the water source for the project. They could not be worked around, and we were left with no other viable option then to close out the project.  However, this also means we had the opportunity to start a new project. Our new project consists of making improvements to a school in Pasto Calle, Ecuador in the Cotopaxi province.  This school is a fiscal educational institution with the goal of expanding educational services in the area, by increasing the area's student capacity by 30%.  Currently a small classroom building and a latrine building have already…
